A dramatic situation
More than four months of armed conflict against the civilian population of Gaza leave more than 25,000 people dead and thousands missing under the rubble, in addition to absolute devastation.
With more than 1.7 million people displaced, the threat of famine is increasingly present, at a time when land access routes for the entry of humanitarian aid are insufficient.
A complex immediate response mission
Given the desperate situation suffered by the population in Gaza, we once again partnered with World Central Kitchen in a highly complex humanitarian mission that, if the objective was achieved, would open a necessary route of entry to meet the basic needs of the civilian population.
If this maritime humanitarian corridor were to be opened, it would be the first easing of the Israeli naval blockade imposed on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas took control of the Palestinian enclave.
Israel has described the corridor as a means to end its civilian ties with Gaza, where it has been waging a 12-week offensive in retaliation for a wave of cross-border killings and kidnappings by Hamas gunmen.
With hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians displaced and acute shortages of basic goods, the idea may also go some way to meeting a Dec. 22 UN Security Council resolution calling for expanded humanitarian aid mechanisms.
